freedom*

The Vice President concluded his opening remarks at 11:50am, and received
another standing ovation.

The VP and Mike Farris, the President, CEO, and General Counsel of Alliance
Defending Freedom (ADF), then sat down for a Q&A:

*Farris’ first question was about “Right to life.*” Pence said it is his
greatest pleasure to serve as VP to a president who prioritizes “the
sanctity of human life.”

“Let me promise you, this president, this administration will always stand
for the right to life.”

*On religious liberty: “*There are real challenges around the world” he
said. He mentioned the challenges in China in the Xinjiang region with the
imprisonment of the Uighurs. He also spoke of issues in Nicaragua.

“In one instance after another we see not only oppression but violence on
people of faith.” He discussed the violence in New Zealand, and spoke of
how Pence and the Second Lady recently went to the Poway synagogue in San
Diego that was attacked by a mass shooter. He called these attackers
“violent” and “racist.”

*On how the Trump administration has been “successful” in getting judges
through: *Pence said it’s because President Trump is “a man of his word.”

He touted the Federalist Society and other similar groups for helping with
getting Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh through. “We’ve got a deep bench,”
Pence said, and the crowd broke into applause.

*What advice can you give to us to handle attacks and criticize from the
public? *

“Spend more time on your knees than on the internet,” Pence said to more
applause. “As a christian believer we’re charged with praying for our loved
ones and also our enemies … I would say that forgiveness is a great gift
and my wife and I try and work through forgiving people who might speak
woefully against us or might mischaracterize who we are and what our family
is all about. I am incredibly proud of my wife. ”

“A lot of it is extending grace. And finally, just focusing on the cause.
… we need to stay focused on things that are more important than
ourselves.”
